As we move through a teaching experience, we have countless opportunities to engage with, and communicate with, our students. This often begins with the syllabus and then continues with, for example, announcements on Canvas, emails with individual students, and “instructor talk” (the noncontent language we use during class). In this workshop, we will explore the different avenues for communicating with students and consider what messages we are sending through each of them. We will identify strategies that help us communicate messages of support and belonging.
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
-- Identify strategies for communicating with students throughout the semester
-- Evaluate what implicit messages are communicated to students based on the what’s written/said
-- Reflect on what role the syllabus plays in your own course
-- Develop ideas for how to use more positive “instructor talk” in your classes

This workshop will take place asynchronously over the course of a week. Shortly before the workshop begins you will receive an invitation for a Canvas course where you'll find the workshop activities. The activities are meant to be completed throughout the week, but the schedule will be flexible to allow you to complete it at your own pace.
