Summative assessments, e.g., end-of-unit or end-of-semester papers or projects, are not only useful to us as instructors as a means of evaluating student work but can serve as opportunities for learning. This workshop will support you in developing the kinds of summative assessments which align with your course learning outcomes and provide learning opportunities. In order to support both learning and motivation, we’ll also explore how to create authentic assessments which offer students choices and are presented transparently.
By the end of the workshop, you should be able to:
-- Describe how summative and formative assessments differ
-- Choose summative assessments which align course learning outcomes
-- Apply the GRASPS framework to develop authentic assessments
-- Describe ways to offer students choices in how they demonstrate their learning
-- Explain strategies for creating more transparent assessments
-- Analyze the benefits of applying these principles of assessment design

Workshops in the Ten for Teaching series focus on essential classroom teaching skills. These workshops are aligned with the outcomes of the CTL’s Evidence-Based Teaching Certificate and support instructors in building the skills they need in order to earn the certificate.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This workshop will run for one week (Mon-Fri) and is designed for you to spend 20-40 minutes per day (slightly different each day) engaging with workshop content and activities. You will receive an invitation to the Canvas course a few days before the start of the workshop. All content will be available from the start so that you can work at your own pace.
