Alternative Fall Break Program Overview

Our Alternative Fall Break experience will introduce you to the vast Treasure Valley network fighting food insecurity. We'll take a thoughtful look into the needs of our community, as well as the resources, individuals, and groups working together to ensure Idahoans (and Broncos) have what they need to be food secure. Once accepted, you will receive details to register for LEAD 225, the academic course designed to prepare you for your service project. Further, you’ll learn about philosophies surrounding volunteering, root causes, community building, and becoming an active citizen. Please note that attendance in LEAD 225 is required for participation on the service trip. Civic Engagement and Leadership Class

The Alternative Fall Break program includes a service-learning course that leads up to the Thanksgiving break service project. The academic course takes place during the fall semester. You have the option to register for 1-credit or 3-credits, as well as audit the course. Attendance is required. The class is composed of five Friday sessions from 1:30-4:15 p.m. Four sessions occur before the service project (11/1 11/8, 11/15, 11/22), and one is held after your return to campus (12/6). This fun and interactive class will provide you with opportunities to explore the theory of integrating service, education, and reflection to create meaningful change in communities both near and far. Through this class, you will also get to know your fellow trip participants and staff trip leader.

Fees and Scholarship Opportunities

Alternative Break Scholarships are intended to provide financial support to students who would otherwise not be able to participate in this program. Please fill out the scholarship application if you are seeking financial support and feel you meet the intent of the scholarship. The scholarship application is due at the same time as the Alternative Fall Break application. You can apply for the scholarship using this link.
