The goal is to offer a forum to engage one another on challenging topics, model open inquiry, and celebrate this work together. Conversations are: Collaborative, respectful small-group discussion, grounded in short, balanced readings or screenings (the readings are generally available a week before each conversation), and designed to build relationships across differences.
Campus Conversations are sponsored by the Office of Community Engagement and Belonging, the Institute for Advancing American Values, and the Heterodox Academy Campus Community at Boise State.
At the Institute for Advancing American Values, we believe that productive conversations begin with productive and respectful listening.
We are honoring that program by asking each faculty and staff member who attends the October 6 Campus Conversations to speak for 5-7 minutes on the topic "What do you value? and why?" If you feel comfortable, we would ask you to tie the answer to those questions to the broader question of how your value informs your broader political or social perspective.
The attendees at each table will share their responses with those at their table. Only after all have spoken will an opportunity for conversation arise.
The objective of this experience is to practice reverent listening. To listen to each perspective and to not respond. To think about the perspective of others and attempt to understand (and hopefully appreciate) how the values of others share something in common with your own values.
