INTEGRATING CAREER EDUCATION INTO YOUR COURSE OR PROGRAM

At Boise State, our students gain vital skills for success beyond graduation. In Career Services, we refer to this as career readiness—the essential skills students need to thrive Beyond Boise State.

We know that many students don't immediately connect what they learn and experience in your classes with the skills necessary for a successful career. If students don't recognize they possess these valuable skills, how can employers and graduate programs recognize them?

Our Guiding Principles

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to integrating career education into a curriculum. Given the unique nature of academic programs, faculty roles, industries, courses, and students, there are countless ways this work can be integrated. As you consider these ideas, please keep the following in mind:

  • This is about celebrating what is currently being done, not pointing out failures

  • Your students are career-ready – this work is to help them see that

  • Focus on the competency behaviors, not just definitions – a student might not connect with a definition. However, describing behaviors can help students find things they already do that are making them be career-ready

  • Focus on reflection – Incorporating career-related reflection allows students to reflect on their experiences and connect with these skills, yet also allows you to help students in this reflection without you needing to be an expert in this area.
